A few people have disparaged this post because it is discriminatory towards people that have no choice about their browsers while claiming that IE6 support really isn’t that hard.
To this I answer:
- We are a gaming site. If you are locked down enough to require IE6, chances are you won’t be able to use our site for a myriad of other reasons (Flash version, for instance or content filtering restrictions).
- IE6 support is a cost/benefit choice - for us, the cost is high, not just for layout and CSS but quirkiness in how IE6 implements javascript and cookies and the lack of developer tools to aid in debugging. We’re building a cutting edge product, so we need to draw the line somewhere in order to make sure anyone allowed into the site has a great experience. The benefits are small - supporting a small percentage of users that are highly likely to have a poor experience due to performance issues of other kinds.
- If every site on the internet continues to support IE6 100%, users will not even be aware that better, standards compliant browsers exist. Until they are given a reason to switch, there will be no incentive to upgrade or to start convincing their corporate overlords to allow upgrades.
As developers, we need to help support the best tools available.

I’m with both these guys, and burnt toast though seemingly harmless does a wonderful job of getting the point across.
