Goodbye Bush, Goodbye 9/11…

On this final day of the Bush presidency I can’t help but think about how different his legacy would look without 9/11. His presidency is marked by that fateful moment atop the rubble at Ground Zero when he called out: “The people who knocked these buildings down will hear of us soon”. Instead of appealing to hope, change, or to make appeals for public service, he chose to feed the fires of our fear and sense of revenge. This revenge and fear led us head first into Iraq, secret prisons, wiretapping, and executive privilege.

I hope the inauguration of Barack Hussein Obama is not only a turning point from Republican to Democrat and the end of the Bush era. I hope that it marks the end of the stranglehold 9/11 has had on our politics.
